APPLICATION STEPS
Step 1 Clean and dry the new tattoo and surrounding skin (lotions or ointments are not necessary).
Step 2 Cut the Saniderm tattoo aftercare bandage to allow at least 1 inch of Saniderm to be in contact with undamaged skin. More extra room is suggested in highly mobile areas.
Step 3 Peel off the paper backing to reveal the adhesive side.
Step 4 Gently apply the bandage using light pressure. For best results, ensure that the skin is in a neutral position.
Step 5 Remove the plastic backing, leaving only Saniderm on the skin.
Step 6 Wear the first bandage for 24 hours, depending on how much the tattoo weeps. Remove the first bandage, clean and dry the area, apply a second bandage. Bandages applied after the first can be worn for up to 6 days.
Tattoo Aftercare: The Complete Guide to Keeping Your New Tattoo Looking Its Best
Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience. Whether it's your first piece or you're adding to a growing collection, proper aftercare is one of the most important steps in protecting your investment. A well-cared-for tattoo heals beautifully, keeps its vibrant colors, and reduces the risk of infection.
At our studio, we're committed to creating artwork you'll love for years to come. That's why we make sure every client leaves with the knowledge they need to care for their new tattoo.
Why Tattoo Aftercare Matters
A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. Your skin needs time to heal, and during that healing process, it's important to protect the tattoo from bacteria, excessive moisture, and irritation. Following proper aftercare instructions helps ensure:
Faster healing
Brighter, longer-lasting colors
Reduced risk of infection
Less scabbing and itching
Better overall tattoo appearance
Tattoo Aftercare: Step-by-Step
1. Keep the Bandage On
Your tattoo artist will cover your new tattoo with a protective bandage or wrap. Leave it on for the amount of time recommended by your artist, usually between 2 and 24 hours depending on the type of dressing used.
2. Wash Your Tattoo Gently
Once you remove the bandage:
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Clean the tattoo using lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, gentle soap.
Remove any excess ink, blood, or plasma without scrubbing.
Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry.
Avoid using rough towels, washcloths, or sponges.
3. Apply a Thin Layer of Moisturizer
Once the tattoo is dry, apply a small amount of tattoo aftercare lotion or fragrance-free moisturizer. A thin layer is all you need—using too much can trap moisture and slow healing.
Repeat this 2–3 times per day as needed to keep the skin hydrated.
What to Avoid During Healing
To help your tattoo heal properly, avoid the following for at least two weeks or until your artist advises otherwise:
Swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans
Direct sunlight and tanning beds
Tight or abrasive clothing over the tattoo
Scratching or picking at peeling skin
Heavy soaking in baths
Your tattoo may peel, flake, and itch during healing. This is completely normal. Resist the urge to scratch or peel the skin, as this can affect the final appearance of your tattoo.
How Long Does a Tattoo Take to Heal?
Most tattoos heal on the surface within 2–3 weeks, but deeper layers of skin can take up to 6–8 weeks to fully recover.
Everyone heals differently depending on:
Tattoo size
Placement
Skin type
Overall health
How closely aftercare instructions are followed
Signs Your Tattoo Is Healing Normally
During the first few weeks, it's normal to experience:
Mild redness
Slight swelling
Light scabbing
Peeling skin
Mild itching
However, if you notice severe swelling, increasing pain, excessive redness, pus, or fever, contact a healthcare professional as these may be signs of an infection.
Long-Term Tattoo Care
Once your tattoo has healed, keeping it looking fresh is simple:
Moisturize your skin regularly.
Apply sunscreen whenever your tattoo is exposed to the sun.
Stay hydrated and maintain healthy skin.
Proper long-term care helps preserve sharp lines and vibrant colors for years to come.
